One of Ontario’s busiest transportation corridors, Highway 400, began a major expansion project through Kings Township in late 2016. This $79.3 million dollar (CAD) project includes the widening of the highway from three to six lanes in each direction for a two mile stretch and also entails safer on and off ramps, the expansion and realignment of culverts, and the replacement of two bridges − one of them the South Canal Bridge.
The job site is located in a well-traveled and populated area, with a park-n-ride area, culverts, and marshland all being factors for construction. With Highway 400 still highly active, there was no crane access available.
Chosen for its light weight and superior performance
The contractor had to find a way to not only build up the formwork to the needed lengths and heights, but to also move all formwork from one side of the highway to the other to pour the wingwalls and bridge abutments – all without the use of a crane. This made MevaLite the hands-down best solution for the job. While offering all the advantages of a traditional clamp system and achieving a sturdy pour rating of up to 1,350 psf, it is so light that its panels can be transported and positioned by only one worker. This is ideal for job sites such as South Canal Bridge where assembly and stripping have to be done without a crane.

The contractor was able to completely set up the MevaLite formwork in just two days, saving time and labor, and keeping on schedule. All accessories are attached with the same size flange screw to the welded-in DW threads of the panels’ multi-function profiles – requiring less accessories on the cramped jobsite, reducing logistics and easing transport without a crane. The workers love the system and how easy it is to handle, put together and move. The contractor was also very happy with MEVA’s services.
